Bustamante Hospital for Children Commemorates Paediatric Cancer Awareness Month

Sep 16, 2019  |  Kingston

The Haematology Department and Oncology Unit at Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) will continue to commemorate Paediatric Cancer Awareness Month in September 2019 under the theme “Recharge the hero in you”. Each year, approximately 30 children less than 13 years old are diagnosed with cancer at the BHC.

This year, the BHC C.A.R.E (Cancer Aide and Resource Extraordinaires) Support Group was launched to raise funds for cancer patients and their families in need.

A number of activities have been planned throughout the month including a church service held Sunday, September 1, 2019 at the Swallowfield Chapel in Kingston. There will also be educational talks for parents of children with cancer.

In addition, the hospital staff will participate in an educational session hosted by the SickKids Caribbean Initiative, through the hospital’s telemedicine facilities.

BHC will also partner with the Flow Foundation for the fourth year in a row to host a treat for the Cancer patients on  Friday, September 27, 2019.

The staff will also be hosting an event called “Superhero Day” which is the final number of activities to commemorate Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The objective of the month is to increase awareness about childhood cancer and to educate the public about the disease and organisations that provide support for children with cancer.
